The Sun

An animation of the sun, seen by NASA’s Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) over the course of 6 days, starting June 27, 2005. (Courtesy of SOHO/EIT consortium)

The Sun is the dominant body of the solar system, constituting more than 99 percent of its entire mass. (Encylopedia Britannica)

That idea is more amazing when you read
how it was made.

“By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth”
Psalm 33:6
King James Version (KJV)

“The skies were made by God’s command;
he breathed the word and the stars popped out.”
Psalm 33:6
The Message (MSG)

Our Father made a host of stars by His breath. Wow.

My friend made a blog post months ago that reminded us not to put God in a box. Reading the above reminds us again.

no matter how deep the water gets

flood

Some days come easy, while other days it feels like a struggle to simply keep your head above water and breathe. I had been struggling a bit with a few things a couple weeks ago, and that Sunday we sang a song during worship that has reverberated in my head and heart many times since. Specifically the line “I will follow You with every step, no matter how deep the water gets.”

When I hear that I think back to the Israelites on the several occasions they had to cross a large body of water. Think about Moses leading them into what appeared to be a death trap: an impossible body of water in front of them, and a seething mass of metal, men and anger behind. Or how about when Joshua lead the people of God across dry land and into the Canaan while the overflowing Jordan was held back before their eyes. Were they thinking about the deep water? Were they questioning in that moment whether they really wanted to follow God no matter where He might lead?

I pray that my faith and courage will stand this test and the many to come in our future. And when I falter, I know that I have amazing friends who will be at my back, encouraging me on and reminding me that God’s going to push back the water.

Jesus be my light when the darkness hides my way
Jesus be my hope, when I’m weak Lord be my strength

Jesus be my joy, for Your grace You’ve given free
Jesus be my song, I am Yours and forever will be

And I will follow You with every step
No matter how deep the water gets
Oh Jesus Your love has rescued me
And I will follow You wherever You lead

Tale of a tiger

My wife Sarah said, “You’re really into those Tigers huh?” The truth is yes, yes I was.

For New Years and our 1 year anniversary we went to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, GA. It’s a cool place with good roller coasters and even cooler animals. It was Marley’s first big road trip. She did great and Ty was really into the hotel room. “Wow it has this cool tiny fridge!”

I was having a moment while looking at these tigers. My simple thought was “God You designed/created/made/built this powerful creature.” I was in awe and it was not my first time seeing a tiger. I was imagining myself encountering this beast in its natural setting and me NOT in my natural setting. The idea of that commanded much respect. It gave me chills. I also wanted to plan an expedition. I did not tell Sarah this but after a year of being married to me, she most likely knew I was thinking it.

Genesis 1:24-25 ( For all you old school Created Ex folk)

And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Verse 26 tells one of our responsibilities.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

——————————————————————————————–

Lots to be read in that little passage. The picture I took of that mighty tiger is below. Look at the colors and patterns. Imagine the strength in its jaws and the size of his teeth. I encourage all of us to look at the world around us with pause. See it for what it really is.

A miracle.

#2012

A new year begins, and it feels like it is bristling with opportunity. Every new year brings the chance to look at things from a fresh perspective; to realign, adjust, or perhaps just start from scratch. As I sit and ponder this January 1, however, something feels…different: expectant, pregnant. I do not know what this “something” is, but I am excited to find out.

Several times in the first days of the new year God has prompted me to consider Isaiah 43:18-19. Certain lines in this text leap off the page at me. A reminder to put the past behind me – to let go. A beautiful promise of a new work in my life; something only God can begin. And finally this idea that there is going to be a river in the desert. What an amazing image; a parched, cracked riverbed suddenly overflowing its banks with cool, refreshing water. It does more than change the scene, it changes the entire climate. Suddenly life is possible in that weary place. New things grow because water is available to then.

As God begins to work new things in all of our lives, it is important for us to examine ourselves and be ready for Him to direct us to change. As with last year, we will begin this new season by fasting and praying so that we are focused completely on God when He begins to tell us what He has in store. I do not want to be distracted in that moment.

During the sermon this week our pastor laid some questions out for us to consider. I would encourage you to prayerfully ponder these questions and see if God is prompting you to answer any of them.

  1. If God were to give you one thing this year, what would you ask for?
  2. What one thing do you lack in your relationship with God?
  3. What one thing do you need to let go?
  4. What one thing do you need to help you press on to finish the race God has set before you?
  5. What are you willing to do in order to see God do something new in your life?

Be expectant that God is going to do something new in your life. Seek out His plans, and follow with abandon the path He has before you.

thankful

yes, it’s cliche to post about thankfulness around Thanksgiving, but i am, so i shall.

during this season of my life i am particularly thankful for relationships.

first of all my wife, who exemplifies what it means to be a Godly, loving woman. she is an amazing example of the woman depicted in Proverbs 31:10-31, without whom i would be lost and incomplete. she has sacrificed so much to support our family while i complete school, to support me in my different times of ministry, and most recently to bring home Baby Shows.

second for my family, who continually choose to love and back us in all of our decisions. they have been an unwaivering source of wisdom and support as we make life decisions together.

finally for good friends: friends who love us with the love of Christ; friends who give us wise council and pray with us through good and hard situations; friends who choose to speak into our lives words of truth and not just things our ears want to hear.

i thank God not only for these relationships in my life, but also that they have endured through a season that has not always allowed me to spend as much quality time cultivating them as i would like.

as we enter this week specifically set aside to recognize how blessed our lives are, what are you thankful for? share with a comment here on the site or on our facebook page. let’s encourage one another by giving thanks together.
